The Transformation of a 17th-Century Warehouse in Istanbul
Constructed in the second half of the 17th century, the building was initially used as a wheat warehouse and, in the following years, as a salt warehouse. During the Republican period, it continued to serve as a tobacco warehouse. After the 1980s, the building fell into disuse and gradually faced oblivion. Over the past 10 years, through its renovation and adaptation to new functions, it has been brought back to life and was registered as a heritage asset in 2017.
Standing for more than 150 years, the Salt Warehouse represents a fine example of industrial buildings. The restoration and renovation works have given the building a new identity, allowing it to defy time for many more years to come.
GAD Foundation works to positively affect practice and theory in architecture and urbanism with a focus on education, society and their intersection with architecture and urbanism.
