BirOnbir Kartal I

Architectural Roofscapes in the Urban Context
Located in the Orhantepe district of Kartal on Istanbul’s Asian side, BirOnbir Kartal represents GAD Architecture’s evolving approach to residential design where the roof becomes the defining architectural element. The roof form is seamlessly integrated into the building’s overall massing, extending into deep eaves combined with sun-shading profiles that create both afunctional and expressive architectural language.
Istanbul’s shifting climatic conditions require a balance between solar protection in the hot summer months and the admission of daylight during the cooler seasons. In response, the project employs a series of façade and roof elements designed to maximise comfort and enhance everyday living. Operable sun-shading systems and mesh-clad details further enrich the architectural composition while supporting user comfort and environmental performance.
BirOnbir Kartal builds on design principles tested in earlier GAD projects such as the AHK Kundu Villas in Antalya and Ege Yapı Ormanyaka in Çekmeköy, Istanbul, translating them into the urban context of Kartal.
BirOnbir Kartal embodies GAD’s philosophy of redefining the roof not simply as a protective cover but as an architectural gesture that speaks to the contemporary life of the city.
GAD Foundation works to positively affect practice and theory in architecture and urbanism with a focus on education, society and their intersection with architecture and urbanism.
